The ESE measures the number of Gospel Oriented churches in the geographic regions of Europe.  These churches are gatherings or fellowships of Gospel Oriented Christians .

The results are gathered from responses to the sixth question on the ESE survey:

How many of the churches mentioned in the previous question would you estimate are
actively concerned about the people in their community and their relationship with Jesus
    Christ?

The answers for this question are first normalized by dividing the 2005 population for each geography by the number of churches reported.  This yields a value of population per church.  Values from NUTS regions in the same nation were used to estimate the population per church value for those NUTS regions where there is no data.  For example, the population per church number for the Méditerranée region of France (fr8) was estimated from the averages of the population per church values calculated from data from the other seven regions of France.

The table below lists the number of Gospel Oriented churches and the population / church estimates from the ESE for each multi-national region in this study.  Please consult the final report for a thorough explanation of these regions.  The right column compares each region's value to the European average.  A table for the nations of Europe can be found in the final report.

The population per church values are shown on maps of Europe below: 1) a map of the NUTS  regions of Europe, 2) a map of the nations of Europe, and 3) a map of multinational European regions.

Territories with no coloration are NUTS regions were there were not multiple responses for this result.  These singular responses were still incorporated into the National and Multi-National results.

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) is defined and developed by the European Union according to a number of basic principles (see the official Eurostat website for complete details of these principles: http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/ramon/nuts/basicnuts_regions_en.html).  Throughout this report, NUTS level 1 regions are used with the exception of Romania (where level 2 is used).  Nations without E.U. defined NUTS regions are subdivided into territorial units using similar principles.  The ESE report refers to all of these sub-national areas as NUTS regions.
